THE ARTIST: DREEEMY
DRĖĖĖMY (also known as Reem Abdou) is an international 1st-generation indigenous Egyptian creative, arts curator, sound composer, poet, women’s activist & community organizer based in New York City.
After a decade of offering embodied explorations of consciousness and self-study at the intersection of arts, culture, and well-being, she has embarked on an archival year-long, multi-dimensional eco-Afro-futuristic project mixing traditional and futurist technologies by fusing rhythm-forward electronic music production with folk elements of myth, song, and storytelling (performed prominently by her Native Egyptian/immigrant mother - the artist Nermein El Rawi). Her intention is to explore, preserve, and share her cultural heritage & traditions in the digital age.
FEATURed ARTIST: NERMEIN EL RAWI
NERMEIN EL RAWI is a Native Egyptian artist, translator, singer, and songwriter preserving the cultural music of Egypt, the Middle East, the Sahara, and North Africa. She is an immigrant to NYC, having arrived in Brooklyn from her politically-fraught homeland with the intention to sing freely in 1988.
Nermein's repertoire and life-long career as a vocalist spans classical Arabic compositions, modern Middle Eastern rhythms, tribal traditions of the Nile, and devotional music at the intersection of song and spirituality.
With unmatched tonal clarity and raw emotion, her music evokes the human condition: she sings of love, of loss, and of life.

THE INTENTION
MOTHER & WATER intends to preserve cultural wisdoms and musical traditions that are in real danger of extinction. It is a practice and process of mixing traditional forms of sonic storytelling with rhythm-forward electronic music production to offer mainstream listeners and dancers entry points into the heritage rites and rituals that can only authentically be translated and transported via creative vessels.
MOTHER & WATER is also an inquiry into climate justice and ecological preservation. Most indigenous understandings of the Earth and its creative force are feminine in nature, and this work aims to feature and uplift those perspectives. The traditions of a place are often tied to the land and waters of the place: this project aims to remind us that are care for the planet, is our care for art as we know it.
Most all structural inequality and intergenerational trauma across all cultures can be traced to the ways in which we hold and treat these two vital resources. Because music itself is enduring and universal across all cultures of our planet, music produced with the intention of uplifting marginalized perspectives has the power to generate great, profound impact in our bodies, our communities, and the environment itself.

MOTHER & WATER AS A WHOLE is motivated by and draws inspiration from CULTURAL PRESERVATION & THE climate justice movement, uplifting the languages and stories of sacred sites + bodies of water - including the human artists (bodies of water themselves) who are transcribing and translating these myths, legends, symbols and songs THAT BECOME OTHERWISE LOST TO THE SANDS OF TIME.

In order to create and share this full body of work / audio-visual experience, we are calling in resources that can help make it possible to harvest, design, and intentionally offer these original compositions of music and meditation, immersive performance, interactive well-being experiences, cultural education & activation, and related creative works.
These resources will also make it possible to adequately and abundantly support the deeply talented local and internationalartists who are bringing this project and vision to life.
